Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Chiapas - Other Cities And Attractions

Tuxtla Gutierrez was declared the capital of the State of Chiapas in 1892, when the seat of government was moved from San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is more of a modern center whose prime points of interest are the Manuel Alvarez del Toro Zoo and the nearby and majestic Sumidero Canyon on the Grijalva River.

Tuxtla GutierrezIt's one of the main Chiapas sightseeing places. It has grown and evolved throughout its history, not looking for anything that might obstruct its vigor and energy. Proof of this can be seen in the modern construction of the city, which speaks of a down to earth, but vibrant population. Nonetheless, the city retains its charm from the special magic of the flavor of the state.

As in most Mexican cities, it has a central square (Zocalo) in the heart of the city.
