The state is named after a former kingdom in Spain and was originally known as Nuevo Reyno de Leon which means “New Kingdom of Leon.” Nuevo Leon was founded by settlers from both Spain and Portugal. Nuevo Leon is one of the wealthiest states in the country.
Known as the heartbeat that drives Mexico's economic development, Nuevo Leon is highly industrialized and boasts a standard of living that is higher than any other country in Latin American and even some European nations as well. The infrastructure of Nuevo Leon includes excellent roadways and railroads and many of these are utilized for exporting produced goods to the United States. El cerro de la Silla (the Hill of the saddle) is a mountain that looks like a horse saddle is a landmark that symbolizes the State of Nuevo Leon.
