Morelos was named after José María Morelos, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence. Anenecuilco in Morelos was the hometown of Emiliano Zapata. The state was the center of Zapata's revolutionary activity. Morelos was traditionally Nahuatl-speaking territory, and variants of the language are still spoken today in towns such as Cuentepec, Hueyapan, and (a very different variant) Tetelcingo.
