The Cathedral
The Cathedral, also known as the basilica de Nuestra Señora Del Refugio in 1870 was the headquarters of the Tamaulipas bishopric. It was converted into a cathedral in 1895. The construction, with its popular neoclassic façade, was completed in 1920. However, the cathedral seat was moved to the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús parish church in 1962. Pope John Paul II gave it the title of basilica in 1990.
The style on the interior is sober Gothic; there are ojival arches, a main altar and two side altars, all of which are made of fine carved wood. There is also a small chapel and an altar annex dedicated to the Santísimo that has the same sober Gothic style as the rest of the church.
